FAQ, Hints & Tips
How do I Bed In my SB2 Diamond Stone?
A new SB2 diamond stone can feel noticeably more aggressive than its grit rating suggests. Even a fine surface may seem sharper than expected during the first few uses — this is normal.
During the electroplating process, most diamond particles are securely bonded into the nickel layer, but a small number sit slightly higher on the surface. These elevated particles are naturally removed during early sharpening.
While this settling phase takes place, the stone may cut very quickly. After several sessions, the surface stabilizes and the grit behaves more consistently, with a smoother and more predictable feel.
What type of diamond: Monocrystalline or Polycrystalline?
The SB2 Diamond Stones use premium monocrystalline diamond.
Monocrystalline diamond is made from single-crystal particles. These are typically tougher and more wear-resistant, so they hold their cutting points longer and deliver a more consistent feel and finish over time.
Polycrystalline diamond is made from clustered micro-crystals. It can fracture more readily, creating fresh sharp edges, but it generally breaks down faster and can feel less consistent as the particles wear.
That’s why monocrystalline diamond is considered the superior choice for long-term, consistent sharpening performance and durability.
I’ve noticed small scratches appearing on the fine grit side. Where’s that coming from?
Occasional light scratches are usually caused by abrasive transfer from a coarser grit.
If a blade is moved from a coarse surface to a finer one without being wiped clean, loose particles can remain on the edge. Those particles may then sit between the blade and the finer surface, leaving faint marks.
These marks are cosmetic and do not affect flatness, durability, or performance. Wiping the blade between grit changes prevents the issue.
How long should the SB2 last?
The SB2 is designed for long, consistent service when used with proper technique.
Diamond wear occurs gradually in the upper working layer. Using controlled pressure and appropriate lubrication ensures steady performance over many years of sharpening.
Stone life is influenced more by sharpening technique than by frequency of use.
Does using more weight or force when sharpening speed up the process?
No.
Diamond plates do not respond to increased pressure by cutting faster. Excess force increases stress on the nickel bond and can reduce service life.
Light, steady pressure and good control deliver the best cutting efficiency and help preserve the surface.
How flat is the SB2 diamond bench stone?
Each SB2 is manufactured and checked to within ±0.00175″ (±0.045 mm), measured corner-to-corner across the working face. That tolerance is approximately half the thickness of a typical human hair.
Should I clean my diamond stone during use?
Yes — particularly during longer sharpening sessions.
As steel is removed, fine metal particles mix with lubricant to form swarf. If this accumulates on the surface, cutting efficiency can reduce.
With the stone dry, use the cleaning block to lift residue from the surface. Keeping the plate clear maintains consistent abrasion.
Do I use the SB2 dry or lubricated?
The SB2 can be used dry, but a low-viscosity lubricant improves performance.
A dedicated lapping fluid helps suspend fine metal particles, reducing clogging and maintaining cutting speed. Oil is generally too thick and can reduce abrasion. Water performs adequately but requires thorough drying before storage.
Using a suitable lapping fluid provides the most consistent results.
Can I use the SB2 to sharpen ceramic knives?
Yes. Diamond abrasives are harder than ceramic, making the SB2 suitable for sharpening ceramic blades.
Do SB2 stones need flattening like whetstones?
No. Diamond stones maintain flatness and do not require flattening. They are often used to flatten other types of sharpening stones.
What is the purpose of the surface pattern?
The SB2 surface pattern assists with fluid and swarf movement during sharpening. The contour lines help channel debris-laden lubricant away from the blade contact area, reducing the likelihood of clogging.
This helps maintain consistent cutting performance during extended use.
Can I regrind primary angles using the SB2?
It is technically possible, but not recommended.
The SB2 is intended for controlled refinement at the cutting edge. Significant material removal, such as altering a primary bevel, is more efficiently carried out using powered grinding equipment.
Heavy regrinding on a bench stone will be slow and may shorten the stone’s working life unnecessarily.
Should I use water or oil to lubricate when sharpening?
Oil is generally too viscous and may reduce cutting efficiency. Water performs better but requires the stone to be fully cleaned and dried before storage.
A purpose-made lapping fluid provides low viscosity, efficient cutting action, and improved resistance to oxidation after sharpening.
M.POWER’s water-based, fully synthetic lapping fluid contains no nitrates, mineral oil, sulphur, chlorine, or phenol. This helps protect tools from rust and reduces the likelihood of skin irritation associated with petroleum-based products.
How should I clean and protect my SB2 after use?
After sharpening: wipe away excess fluid; use the cleaning block to remove surface swarf; if needed, rinse and gently scrub with a used toothbrush and dilute dish detergent or lapping fluid; dry completely before storing.
Avoid storing the stone damp or contaminated with swarf.
Tool Safety
The tools referenced above can be hazardous, particularly for younger users or anyone inexperienced or untrained.
Sharpening should only be undertaken by users with adequate skill, knowledge, and understanding to do so safely.

Nice quality system. I’m happy so far.

Extremely happy with my purchase. Ran all my chisels thru after opening. Ended up very sharp. My only concern, the 1200 stone ended up with several scratches. It was my first time using diamond stones, as I was used to waterstones before. I’ll need to be more aware going forward. Otherwise, I love the system.
CarbonBlack –
Great sharpening set. Cleaned up my chisels in just a few minutes.
